One mission. Built over a lifetime. Coming of age in the age of AI.
Hello. I’m Steve Conley, founder of the Academy of Life Planning.
I am 65.
I have no investable financial capital.
And I am more content than I have ever been.
That is not a contradiction.
It is the lesson.
To understand the Academy—what it is, why it exists and why its ideas connect so deeply with people—you first need to understand the path that brought me here.
I spent much of my working life inside financial services, including senior roles at HSBC, RBS and Santander. I saved into pensions throughout that career. I understood investments, risk and conventional measures of financial success.
But at 50, life turned on a decision.
I could continue working within a system whose incentives I could no longer reconcile with what I believed was right—or I could use everything I had learned to build an alternative.
I chose integrity over security.
Two divorces, taxation and the costs of starting again consumed the financial capital I had accumulated.
What remained was my human capital: knowledge, experience, relationships, reputation, creativity and the ability to continue contributing.
I built the Academy with that.
Over time, I came to understand that wealth is much broader than money. It includes our capabilities, relationships, health, time, environment, purpose and potential—not simply the financial assets recorded on a statement.
The GAME Plan was never designed as a theory to sell.
It emerged from trying to align life, work, money and meaning into something coherent and sustainable.
I do not simply teach the GAME Plan.
I live it.
I am not a conventional success story.
I am a living case study in what becomes possible when financial capital is treated as one means to a worthwhile life—not the measure of the life itself.
Finding My Reason to Continue
The Japanese concept of ikigai is commonly translated as a reason for being—or the thing that makes life feel worth living.
For me, that became:
Helping people restore human agency in systems that too often reward dependency.
It brings together what I know, what I care about and what I can contribute.
For many years, the work provided meaning without providing much financial security. I continued because the purpose remained clear, even when the market was not yet ready.
Artificial intelligence has now changed the conditions around that work.
The need did not suddenly appear.
The possibility of meeting it at scale did.
A Lived GAME Plan
The GAME Plan is not something I created and then applied retrospectively to my story.
It is the pattern that emerged from living it.
I clarified goals grounded in values—not simply income targets, professional status or accumulated assets.
I took actions consistent with those values, including when doing so was personally and financially costly.
I worked with the means available to me. For much of the past 15 years, those means have been primarily human rather than financial: knowledge, experience, relationships, reputation, creativity and persistence.
And I continued to execute—learning, adapting and renewing the plan as circumstances changed.
Life for me would feel financially insecure to many people.
That is a fair observation.
But security and agency are not the same thing. Nor are wealth and investable assets.
I know what enough means for me. I know what I am here to contribute. And I am still able to choose and act in accordance with that understanding.
That is what the GAME Plan looks like when applied to a life.
The GAME Plan — Life Before Money
The GAME Plan™ is the methodology at the heart of the Academy.
It is not a process for producing an expert-owned financial answer.
It helps people move from inherited assumptions and fragmented information towards a consciously chosen, self-authored life.
G — Goals: What would a worthwhile life look like for you? What matters, and what would enough mean?
A — Actions: What practical steps could move you from your present position towards that life?
M — Means: What human, social, environmental, spiritual and financial resources are available to support you?
E — Execution: How will you act, learn, review and renew the plan as life changes?
The starting point is not a portfolio.
It is a person.
Money matters because it supports life. It should not be allowed to define it.
What Has Changed
For 14 years, I built the Academy in a world that was not yet ready for it.
The methodology made sense. The need was visible. But the cost of giving every individual continuing access to personalised planning support was still prohibitive.
Artificial intelligence has changed that.
It can help people organise information, explore possibilities, ask better questions and maintain a living plan continuously.
But AI does not restore agency automatically.
It can mislead, reinforce assumptions and reproduce the interests of the institutions that design or control it. An answer delivered confidently is not necessarily an answer that deserves confidence.
The opportunity is therefore not simply to give people artificial intelligence.
It is to combine:
• a sound whole-person methodology;
• client-owned information and planning infrastructure;
• critical and responsible use of AI; and
• proportionate human expertise when it matters.
That is what the Academy has been building towards.
The direction has not changed.
The means of delivering it at scale have.

The old professional model was built for a world in which information, analytical capability and planning tools were concentrated inside institutions.
That world is disappearing.
People increasingly have access to explanation, analysis and structured thinking without waiting for a professional appointment.
But more information does not necessarily mean better judgement.
The real value of a modern planner is not holding information that clients cannot access.
It is helping people:
• see the whole system;
• test assumptions and AI-generated answers;
• organise complexity;
• navigate change;

• make decisions with confidence; and
• recognise when specialist expertise is genuinely needed.

Still Going
I am 65.
I have no investable financial capital.
But I have knowledge, experience, relationships, purpose and work that I still want to complete.
I have the Academy: a growing community of people developing practical alternatives to dependency-based planning.
And I have a life that makes sense to me.
That does not mean everyone should make the choices I made. Agency is not persuading people to reproduce my life.
It means helping people understand their own position, define enough for themselves and make choices they can genuinely own.
That is what the GAME Plan has done for me.
That is what Academy OS is intended to make available to others.
And that is the work I intend to continue.
