The Prophecy of Eagle and Condor

The Prophecy

Nearly every culture prophesies that at the turn of this Century we entered a special moment in human history. At monasteries in the Himalayas, ceremonial sites in Indonesia, and indigenous reservations in North America – stories such as the Eighth Council Fire, the Slaying and Return of the White Buffalo, the Emergence of the Fifth Sun, the Return of Quetzalcoatl and the Prophecies of the Hopi’s, Chilam-Balam, Sweet Medicine, and Black Elk - from the depths of the Amazon to the peaks of the Andes, and into the ancient Mayan cities of Central America, it is foretold that ours is a period of extraordinary transition, and that each of us was born at this time because we have a mission to accomplish.

The labels and the words of the prophecies differ slightly. They tell variously of a New Age, the Third Millennium, the Age of Aquarius, the Beginning of the Fifth Sun, or the end of old calendars and the commencement of new ones. Despite the varying terminologies, however, they have a great deal in common, and “The Prophecy of the Condor and Eagle” explains the moment most vividly.

Back in the mists of history, human societies divided and took different paths: that of the condor (representing the heart, intuitive and mystical) and that of the eagle (representing the brain, rational and material).

Lauro Hinostroza, a Peruvian healer living in Mexico City explains that in the historical cycles of the Incan peoples at the end of the eighth Pachakuti (each Pachakuti corresponds to five hundred years), the Eagle peoples would dominate the Condor peoples for one Pachakuti.

This coincided with the arrival of Europeans. On the eve of European colonization, Columbus had reached the Americas, shortly followed by the Treaty of Tordesillas dividing the New World between Spain and Portugal. In 1519, Cortés began his conquest of the Aztec empire. In 1532, Piazarro began his conquest of the Inca Empire. Whilst the Aztec capital would be starved into surrender, many peoples of the Incas found the burden of Inca rule so oppressive that they were willing to collaborate with the invader. The Europeans’ extractive economy and industries led to the exploitation, depopulation, and genocidal eradication of the indigenous peoples of the Americas and the decimation of their habitat.

The prophecy continues with the claim that the tenth Pachakuti, from the end of the twentieth century, would be a time for the peoples of the Condor and the Eagle to fly and mate together in a creative symbiosis to restore and regenerate the Earth community. If the condor and eagle accept this opportunity, they will create a most remarkable offspring, unlike any seen before.

Descendants of the Inca people, the Achuar living on the border of Ecuador and Peru, chose our time to emerge from the Amazon jungle to collaborate with the outside world, as a fulfilment of the long-told prophecy of collaboration for survival.

They say, in the beginning, all the earth’s people lived as one, but long ago they divided into two groups each following a different path of development. The people of the Eagle were highly scientific and intellectual. The people of the Condor were highly attuned to nature and the intuitive realm.

After many generations of separation, the Eagle people – the people of intellect and the mind, people with a highly developed sense of the aesthetic and cognitive skills – will have reached a zenith in their amassing of scientific knowledge, technology, and technological tools, expression of high art, and the ability to build and construct.

The Eagle people will even develop tools and technologies that will expand the mind, and they will be producing technical miracles of unimagined power and breadth. The enormous accomplishments and technologies of the people of the Eagle will bring tremendous material wealth to leaders of the Eagle world.

At the same time, they will be spiritually and culturally impoverished to their peril, and their very existence will be at risk as a result of their lack of relatedness with the natural world and the limited understanding of the order of the great spirits.

In this same period, the people of the Condor – people of the heart, the spirit, the senses, and the deep connection with the natural world – will be highly developed in their intuitive skills. Whilst the reign of the Eagle peoples was foretold to nearly bring into extinction the Condor peoples, the few remaining will reach a powerful zenith in their profound ancient wisdom, their understanding and relatedness with the natural world and the great cycles of the earth, their connection with the great spirits, the animals and the plant kingdom, and their capacities to move through the many spirit dimensions that they inhabit.

At the same time, the Condor people will be hungry, and impoverished for knowledge that will enable them to be successful in the material world, and they will be so disadvantaged in their interactions with the material world of the Eagle that their very existence will be at risk.

The prophecy says that at our time in the earth’s history, the Eagle people and Condor people will have an opportunity to re-join. Remembering that they are one people, they will be able to reconnect, remember their common origin, share their knowledge and wisdom, and save each other. The Eagle and Condor will fly together in the same sky, wing to wing, and the world will come into balance after a point of near extinction.

Neither the Eagles nor the Condors will survive without this collaboration, and from the re-joining of the two peoples a new consciousness will emerge that honours the Eagle people for their remarkable accomplishments of the mind, and honours the Condor people for their deep wisdom of the heart. Together – and only together – the crisis will be resolved and a sustainable future will emerge for all.

“The Prophecy of the Condor and Eagle” can be taken at many levels — the standard interpretation is that it foretells the sharing of indigenous knowledge with the technologies of science, the balancing of yin and yang, and the bridging of the cultures of two-worlds. However, most powerful is the message it offers about consciousness; it says that we have entered a time when we can benefit from the many diverse ways of seeing ourselves and the world, and we can use these as a springboard to higher levels of awareness. As human beings we can truly wake up and evolve into a more conscious species.

The “Reunion of the Condor and the Eagle” will begin slowly and then rapidly accelerate following the end of the long-count of the Mayan Calendar, December 21, 2012 and the beginning of the 5th Sun.

It is prophesied that this emergence of human consciousness will ultimately result in a great era of compassion, peace, justice and prosperity that will unite all members of the Human Family.
